Dec 13, 2016Koh-ichiro Morita Memorial Concert—Far Beyond the Stars—

In remembrance of the late professor Koh-ichiro Morita who loved playing the viola, a memorial concert will be held at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan on January 6, 2017.

Professor Morita was engaged in the construction of the Nobeyama Millimeter Array at Nobeyama Radio Observatory from the 1980's and he was one of the world's most renowned specialists of "aperture synthesis" which is a technique to make a single virtual telescope by combining signals from multiple antennas. From the 2000's, he took part in the ALMA project and designed the Atacama Compact Array as part of the Japanese contributions. In ALMA, he made great achievements in the research on how to maximize the performance of the telescope and produce high quality synthetic image. From 2010, he was transferred to the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) in Chile and played a central role as a leader of the system verification team of the international ALMA project. While making devoting efforts for the success of the test observations which had just started, he passed away by a sudden accident in Santiago, Chile, on May 7, 2012.

This concert was realized by the support of professor Morita's wife and musician friends in remembrance of Morita who was an astronomer as well as an amateur viola player.
